First Appearance

Update 1.13.0

Foxes are Passive Mobs that are planned to be released in the upcoming Update 1.13.0.

Spawning[]

Foxes may spawn in two potential biomes. Foxes that spawn in taiga biomes and its variants will be red foxes while foxes that spawn in biomes like snowy plains will be artic foxes. Foxes will also typically spawn in groups of up to 4.

Behavior[]

Foxes are passive mobs which will roam their respective biomes. Although they will not typically attack a player, foxes may attack other passive animals. Red foxes will try to attack rabbits, baby turtles, chickens and seldom fish. On the contrary, artic foxes will try to attack fish first and land mobs second. Foxes will not attack pufferfish however. Red foxes will also eat sweet berry bushes.

Polar Bears and wolves will also try to attack foxes.

Similar to ocelots, foxes have a rapid movement speed. They will also run from a player they are not "trusting". Foxes can begin trusting a player if fed sweet berries. Trusting foxes will also defend the player from any mob that attacks. Baby foxes that spawn from breeding will always trust a player but still run away to follow its parents.

Being a nocturnal mob, foxes are most active at night. They will roam and occasionally sit during the night. During the day, foxes can be found sleeping in areas not directly exposed to light like under trees. Sleeping foxes will awaken if approached by another mob or a player that is not sneaking.

Foxes also are able to hold items through their mouth. If the item is a food item, the fox will eventually eat it.

Breeding[]

Foxes can be bred using a sweet berry on two foxes. Though foxes do not need to trust the player to breed, this task can occasionally be difficult as foxes may still run away or not be lured by the berries.

Trivia[]

  • Their first appearance was within the first beta build of 1.13.0.
  • Foxes have a very low chance of naturally spawning with an item in their mouth.
