Fire is a technical block that was added in Update 0.1.0. It was temporarily removed in Update 0.3.0 because of a bug, but was soon re-added in Update 0.7.0.
Obtaining[]
Fire cannot be obtained in one's Inventory without the use of Inventory Editors, however, it can be created on a Block using Flint and Steel or a Fire Charge. Bed explosions in the Nether and End, and Ghast fireballs can also cause Fire to generate. It can also ignite if flammable blocks are placed in the vicinity of Lava, or in lightning strikes.
Fire can occasionally spawn in The Nether.
Usage[]
Danger[]
When any entity (besides Nether mobs) comes in contact with fire, they take 1 point () of damage. Fire can spread onto any flammable block near it, and destroy it. It also destroys any Items thrown into it.
Any block set on Fire will burn for a variable period of time, depending on the nature of the material. Netherrack has the ability to burn for an infinite period.
Advantages[]
Fire can be used as a way to obtain Cooked Meat without actually needing to smelt the item. It emits a Light level of 15, making it a useful light source. Fire can also be used for traps and as a barrier.
Fire also serves as a heat source, and hence can melt Ice and Snow, however, this may or may not be desirable.
Extinguishing[]
Fire can be extinguished by any one of the following methods:
- Coming in contact with Water.
- Placing a block on the Fire.
- Rain
- Using a Splash or Lingering Potion
- Tapping the block the Fire is on.
Trivia[]
- Before Update 0.3.0, once placed, Fire would spread and destroy the entire world. As a result, it was removed.
- There was a glitch where the Blacksmith in a Village would burn down because of the Lava in the Blacksmith. This was fixed in Update 0.12.1. However, on a very rare occasion it can still happen.
- In Creative Mode, however, it can be broken as if it were a normal block.
- In Update 0.14.2, Fire got a new animation and texture.
- After Update 0.15.0, when Fire is in the Player's hand, it shows a fire sprite.
- Before, it would only appear as an orange rectangle.
- Fire used to be given in the player's inventory using the
/give
command. It was also used to craft Chain armor. However, this was removed.
